The recommended vaccine list applies to both home and international students:

• MMR

• Meningitis ACWY

• Meningitis B

• HPV

• Flu vaccine

• MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine

The MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine - NHS vaccine helps protect against measles, mumps and rubella (german measles). These 3 infections spread easily between people and can lead to serious problems including meningitis, blindness and hearing loss.

2 doses of the MMR vaccine is needed for long-term protection. You will be given the doses at least 1 month apart.

Different countries offer different immunisations and not all use the combined MMR vaccine, so if you were born or brought up abroad you may need 2 doses of MMR. If you do not have a record of the vaccines you have received or are unsure, contact your GP. It is never too late to have the vaccine if you have not had 2 doses.

• Meningitis ACWY vaccine

The MenACWY vaccine - NHS protects against life-threatening illnesses like meningitis and sepsis. People under the age of 25 can get the MenACWY vaccine from their GP.

University students are at greater risk because meningococcal bacteria (which causes meningitis) can spread quickly through close contact, sharing drinks or vapes and living in shared accommodation.

Although the MenACWY vaccine is very effective, it does not prevent all types of meningitis, so it is still important to be aware of the symptoms of meningitis even if you are vaccinated. Check out: Meningitis - NHS

• Meningitis B vaccine

The MenB vaccine for children - NHS vaccine helps protect against bacterial infections caused by meningococcal group B bacteria (MenB). In the UK, it is given to children when they're 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 1 year old.

There was a MenB outbreak in England in 2026 and cases have been increasing in recent years. The MenB vaccine is now also offered, until March 2027, to young people who were born:

-between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008

-on or after 21 July 2001 and are starting university

• ​HPV vaccine

​The HPV vaccine - NHS reduces your chances of getting human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus spread through skin contact (usually when having sex). Some types of HPV are linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, and some types can cause genital warts.

Young people aged 24 and under who missed getting vaccinated, as well as certain eligible groups, can get the HPV vaccination under the NHS.

📆Booking: If you are 25 or over and have not had the HPV vaccine, or not in the eligible groups, you can visit a pharmacy or private clinic, which will incur a fee set by the service provider.

• Flu vaccine 

The flu vaccine is offered on the NHS every autumn/winter to people at higher risk of getting seriously ill from flu.
